    There is nothing wrong with pizza parties and company Olympics - they can be great especially when care is taken to leave nobody behind. But don't confuse that with team development. A team is a special kind of group that has developed the capacity to act as one coherent whole. Much more than social interaction, a team shares an identity around a shared sense of purpose. It's members align to their shared vision, they have shared values.


    These things do not just happen because we enjoy one another's company - they are earned because we work at them. There are processes by which we can clarify that sense of purpose, define what success looks like and agree the values we will espouse. And it never stops! We can always aspire to be more closely bound in our mutual endeavours. Team building might be fun but it is certainly serious. Let's not pretend we are doing it if we are not!
