Recruiters and employers may request a number of things from jobseekers as part of their application. This may include a CV, cover letter and example of work, to more specific things such as links to social media pages and even headshots.

While the latter may be deemed somewhat unusual as blind recruitment processes have become more popular, hiring managers often still want to find out as much as possible about a candidate before meeting with them for an interview.

    While the employer may be insisting that the photo will have nothing to do with the recruitment of the individual it's pretty much impossible to say this. We all know that unconscious bias will play a part. That's why I'd never ask for a photo, unless it's a passport one for a security badge and even then it should be separated from the application form when it's given to management. Regardless of how much an employer insists that a picture will not sway their judgement of a candidate it's pretty much impossible to guarantee this.
