What leaders REALLY think of the Christmas shutdown

December is upon us again and once more; all that people can talk about is Christmas. It dominates every area of our lives – from Dean Martin and Mariah Carey taking over the radio, to the annual bombardment of Christmas adverts on the TV and shop windows piled high with tantalising displays of gifts. And yes, it even massively affects the workplace.

Not only are you likely dealing with the holidays in a professional sense, either selling products to consumers, negotiating Christmas deals or even simply pushing hard to get your work finished before the winter break, it’s also likely that your workplace in some way transformed over Christmas with decorations, colleagues talking about their plans and festive parties taking up much of the work day.

The benefit to Christmas shutdown is just that! Everyone gets a break, they don’t come back to 5 million emails. Being self employed I don’t enjoy the rush to get everything done and the worshipping to the false god consumerism, but i do enjoy the time with family.

Bear in mind the UK has the lowest number of holidays, the highest working hours and productivity is lower. So a break does everyone good!

I don't celebrate Xmas but I still enjoy one of the few times of the year that both my partner and I can get a guaranteed 2 weeks off work together. The TV content improves dramatically and the food is amazing. While I understand that from a business point of view it can be a challenge I don't see why so many people hate the season. Whether you celebrate the actual festivities or not, surely it's a nice time to enjoy with family and friends.
