On December 21st, 2019, the Chinese Government alerted the World Health Organisation that several residents of the Wuhan region within the province of Hubei were suffering from what seemed like a completely unknown illness.
Most of those who were infected by the new virus were known to work at the Hunan Seafood Wholesale Market, which after investigation, was closed down on January 1st. On the same day, health experts were alarmed to discover that the virus was spreading much faster than other viruses, with over 40 people displaying the signs of infection. Just four days later, the Chinese Government ruled out the possibility of the new illness being a recurrence of the SARS virus and noted that the entirely new virus, now identified as COVID-19, was swiftly becoming a serious issue in the region.
