Early last month it was revealed that the UK Government had received almost 800 reports of suspected fraud to its job retention scheme, the Guardian reported. At the time, HMRC, who was overseeing the furlough scheme which sees the Government pay up to 80% of the wages of employees who can no longer work due to the coronavirus pandemic, stated it was assessing the fraud reports and that anyone with information should come forward and report it online. Anyone who dishonestly makes a false representation to HMRC with the intention of obtaining payment as part of the scheme is considered as fraud or an illegal offence.
