Glassdoor is a popular jobs site, which has a review function where employees anonymously rate their employers. Its star ratings are an established feature on the recruitment landscape, with candidates often looking first at the score before deciding whether to proceed with a job application.

    It happens regularly, unfortunately. I know of one local recruitment company who's positive reviews are all written by Senior Management or employees forced in to it. I'm sure that's the tip of the iceberg in terms of how wide-spread the problem is now . I imagine it's a hard one to audit, but I do think Glassdoor should be doing more. In my opinion, from both sides of the coin (ie - People are far more likely to take time to leave a negative review than a positive one) Glassdoor should be ignored until they can find away to provide genuinely accurate, fair accounts of work experiences.

    My current employer has some rather negative reviews on Glassdoor, mostly from about 18 months ago when we had a round of redundancies and whole departments were decimated. Most of the reviews were harsh, but I have to say perfectly fair. Since then even the CEO has been fired, things have improved a little and we are starting to get some above average reviews, but that has not stopped our senior manager asking us to put good reviews on Glassdoor to improve the still-low overall average score that we have; apparently it is hindering our attempts to recruit good candidates.

    Unfortunately, I don't see things as having improved nearly enough, I'm personally looking at leaving as soon as I can, and I don't think it's my place to solve their recruitment problems by writing a review that I do not agree with, possibly causing someone to make the same career mistake that I did and join this employer. They only reason that I haven’t added a review of my own, good, bad or indifferent, is because I am concerned that in such a small team, I would be too easy to identify while I’m still here, especially as I now know for certain that they are monitoring their Glassdoor profile diligently.

    Perhaps if they concentrated more on retaining existing staff, then they wouldn’t need to worry so much about attracting new ones.

    I let a member of staff go after a few weeks with us. She wasn't up to standard in terms of performance or behaviours for our business. She posted a horrendous post about the company and me personally. There was nothing I could do to remove this. Glassdoor said it was anonymous even though I could clearly demonstrate that in my small business it could only be her.
