Chris Stappard, the Founder of Edward Reed Recruitment - an independent consultancy based in the North East of England - explains how his career in managing relationships led him to recruitment...
2008 - 2010
Having worked my way up the ladder at Barclays, this was my first senior management role. Commercial banks operate very client-centric service models so I learned a lot in this role about general customer service and putting clients’ needs first.
2010 - 2014
Building on my experience as Relationship Manager, this role helped me to solidify my knowledge of customer service but also helped me to realise the value of building and maintaining good relationships with clients built on trust and mutual understanding. This has been invaluable to me in the recruitment sector as the entire premise of the industry is structured around networking and building strong relationships with clients and candidates.
In my spare time, I enjoy watching and participating in a variety of sports, including athletics, rugby and football.
2014 - 2015
In this more technically challenging role, I learned the importance of paying attention to the small details and finding a balance between keeping the customer happy while also acting in the best financial interest of the bank. This too has been an important lesson I have taken with me into the recruitment sector as I often need to find ways of keeping both clients and candidates happy, without compromising the needs of either party.
I enjoy jetting off on European city breaks or, when I can find the time, taking a well-earned rest on a far-flung beach holiday
2015 - Present
Edward Reed Recruitment
Becoming the Managing Director of my own recruitment firm has definitely made me more well-rounded, as it’s my responsibility to manage the entire recruitment process from start to finish, from the perspective of both the client and the candidate. This requires a great deal of organisation and a degree of skill in managing peoples’ expectations.
In my role at Edward Reed, by purposefully choosing not to focus on any one sector, I have been exposed to businesses of all shapes and sizes and have met numerous business owners and entrepreneurs. All of these individuals have inspired me in a different way and in turn, helped to shape the business to what it is today.
